When I say “Most Underratedist”, I mean the cats that bring heat behind the boards damn near every time you hear something from them, but haven’t made it to that special place in the game “Where Everybody Knows Your Name” (with a few exceptions). By the way….this list may include Hip-hop, R & B, and – shit….maybe even a little Country. Read this list with an open mind. Walk with me…

Denaun Porter aka Kon Artis:

This guy is usually credited as “Mr. Porter” on songs like Curtsy Boo Boo’s “P.I.M.P.”, Obie Trice’s “Spread Yo Shit” (still in my personal rotation), and Xzibit’s “Multiply”. IMO, the best producers in the game can usually fool you to the point where you’re constantly saying “I didn’t know he did that shit!” (aka versatility), and Denaun is a perfect example of that.

Battlecat:

This ninja is a West coast beast. For real. You can usually tell when Battlecat’s been on the boards because of his heavy use of synths and light keys. He was the man responsible for songs like Kurupt’s “We Can Freak It”, and most recently DPG’s “Cali Iz Active” (certified banger). As you can tell he mostly rolls w/ Snoop…his only setback is his limited West coast sound, which has probably prevented him from branching out and working w/ any others artists outside of the Golden State.

Andre 3000:

Yeah….I know. You know him. Bet you didn’t know he was responsible for a lot of the music that him and Antwan lay those 16s down on (and of course “The Love Below”). He’s also produced for Gwen Stefani (“Bubble Pop Electric”). I’m pretty sure he produces the majority of the songs on his “Class of 3000″ cartoon show as well (I couldn’t find a production discography for him, but feel free to do your own research). Either way, dude is pretty talented.

Organized Noize:

Speaking of OutKast, you can’t forget Rico Wade & company. These guys are responsible for “So Fresh So Clean”, Ludacris’ “Saturday”, and (most notably IMO) TLC’s “Waterfalls”….not to mention the entire “Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik” album. As far as production goes….these cats are ATL legends.

DJ Clue:

Don’t look @ me like that.

Yeah his production style may be a little dated, but Clue was responsible for a lot of dope remixes (and a few of his own joints, too). He’s blessed us with such gems as “U Remind Me (Remix)” w/ Blu Cantrell and Meth Man, and “Thank God I Found You/Make It Last Forever (Remix)” w/ Ms. Mariah feat. Joe and Nas. You know there has to be one “WTF?” in everybody’s list. This is mine.

His beats are usually pretty complex, and he’s pretty versatile on the boards (from samples to synths…real quick like). You’ve most likely heard one of his joints and not even known….he’s that thorough. A few miscellaneous items that might fancy your interest:

“I Am Legend” Trailer (shown above):

It’s about time for a big-budget movie starring an actor worth watching that’s not based on a comic book or a cartoon from the ’80s. “I Am Legend” is a Sci-Fi thriller that apparently takes place a few years into the future. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air stars as “Robert Neville”, a brilliant scientist who is the only human who (due to his immunity) does not fall victim to the terrible virus that he (ironically) helped create.

This looks very promising…I honestly can’t wait (this one’s a no bootleg, folks). The only thing I’m a little concerned about is paying 20 bucks to have one man and his dog hold my attention for at least an half the movie….no homo. Apparently there was some big $5 million scene filmed @ the Brooklyn Bridge (biggest ever for New York), so if the studio is spending that kind of bread – they must smell a hit. If you’re like me (and a couple of my Nahgger friends), you’ll probably wanna read the book that the movie borrows it’s title from before it hits theaters on December 14th. Duane “Dog” Chapman on “Larry King Live”:

Duane Chapman, or Dog the Bounty Hunter, is the last person I think I’d ever expect to throw around the “N” word (view the Larry King episode here). I honestly don’t know what to make of the situation because he, of all people, knows right from wrong. Its his job to know. Granted there could be more to the situation (between him, his son, his son’s mother, and the girlfriend) than we know about – especially if the girlfriend is your stereotypical neck-snappin’ “Shaniqua” (don’t front like you don’t wanna smack those heffas you see stuffing those department store clothes in their kids’ diaper bag…Ol’ booster lookin’ ass bitches) then I could totally understand why Dog would be so angry @ his son for dating her. BUT – thats no excuse.

When it comes down to it, Dog spent a lot of time in the pen…again, no excuse. All I’m saying is that he’s no saint, and that people are human and they lose their temper @ times. You don’t see him walking around in a white hood burnin’ crosses & shit…give the man a second chance. This is, after all, far less worse than the Michael Richards incident, and the Don Imus incident. I’d expect a man like Dog (a somewhat reformed ex-felon) to use that language before those other guys. Again, by no means is it okay to do what he did.

And let’s face it Dog: ain’t nobody buying what you said about you being “cool” enough to use that word. There’s too much “ER” in your speech for that, homie. Take the “L” and K.I.M. bruh.

Oil Prices are Deet Dee Dee:

Some areas of California are now up to $5 bucks a gallon for regular unleaded gasoline, and crude oil is up to $98 a barrel (its probably going higher as I type this). Craziness. Pure. Craziness. Fuck the music industry….ya’ll know where the real TIs reside. Since we here in the Northwest can usually forecast our gas pricing by looking @ Cali’s, our pockets will be feeling the hit pretty soon. Another reason for all ya’ll bastids Republicans to smack yourselves for voting for you-know-who.

Last week I posted about the SoCal fires, and how the response time varied (considerably) in comparison to Hurricane Katrina (if you feel up to it you can read it here). Some people agreed with me…some didn’t. This was exactly what I had expected.

Yesterday I finally got around to cleaning up my spam comments and I came across one in particular that I took offense to. It read:

Before I start this I should let you (and everyone else) know a little about this blog. It was created for one purpose: to say what’s on my mind. Period. I am not a professional writer and I do not aspire to become one. If you want big-ass words and sugar-coated misinformation, CNN is thataway ——->.

I visited your site afterwards and I must say – you’re a pretty intelligent brother (which I will assume you are based on your “Amazon Wish List” page) – but it pains me to even think that you would ever in your life put yourself above another person because of your “educational background”, or because you want to impress the other Uncle Toms you play the back nine with (and if your defense to that statement happens to involve the word “stereotype” then save it, because your response would be pure hypocrisy).

This has far more to do with classism than than anything else – and you have proved my point by calling every single victim of Hurricane Katrina a “corrupt, lazy, criminal” person. Yes – the murder rate is high in New Orleans. Yes – the crime rate is high. These statements are facts.

Did that cause the levees to break?

Does that mean people should live in filth in an building that resembles a Third World country?

What concerns me the most about your statement (and even more if you are African-American) is your complete disregard for another human life.

“Oh…a felon are trapped in his house? He deserves it. Fuck him, his mother who has three other kids to take care of, his sister who was about to actually go to college (and be someone like yourself), and his father with the kidney problem who needs treatment every single day.”

Are you not saying this? Are you not saying that everyone in reach of that California fire deserved to see a faster response time in an emergency situation because they’re better than the people in New Orleans? Are you not saying that the people of New Orleans shouldn’t have been saved at all?

Well that’s what you wrote.

You can hide behind your expensive education, your money, your books, or anything else you may consider of more value than a human life. One thing you’ll probably never know is the love that a lot of these so-called “corrupt, lazy, criminal” people show each other, or would be willing to show you in spite of your ignorance and bigotry. I’m not saying everyone in New Orleans is a saint (no pun intended), but no one deserves what those people went through.

By the way…there are just as many corrupt, lazy, criminal people in your field of expertise (law) as there are in the streets, patna.

But you’re a smart guy….I’m sure you knew that.

I usually leave this news stuff to greenie, but I’m pretty pissed off this morning.

I’m going to attempt to not be Mr. Fantastic today…

I’ve been following the SoCal fire story on and off ever since it began, and I have to say the Governator & Michael Chertoff (Homeland Security Chief) have both done an excellent job in handling relief efforts for the victims of the disaster. Super. Dee. Duper.

Wait – first let me disclaim this entire post before continuing on:

I, Mr. Phuque, have nothing against anyone who has been relocated to the San Diego Arena because their homes have burned to the ground.

Aight, so…

What sickens me about the glorious amount of Trill™ (see: Pimp C) that has suddenly consumed the federal government to move so quick, fast, and in a hurry, is that two years ago, our same government wouldn’t have known relief if I pimp-slapped the FEMA starting line-up with a pack of Rolaids. Mr. Chertoff says:

“Of course, a lot of what we’ve done over the last two and a half years is build on lessons we learned from what happened in New Orleans in 2005,” he said. That was when a slow government response to Hurricane Katrina left thousands of people stranded in flooded homes and overcrowded shelters for days.

Say word?

“Slow government response” was an understatement. Of course I don’t have to tell you about the conditions Katrina victims faced in the SuperDome, because you’ve already heard and forgot about it. Now compare this to the present situation:

“Would I rather be in my home?” asked Yolanda Martinez of the evacuated community of Ramona. “Obviously. But they have done a remarkable job here.”

Remarkable job? Bands?? Clowns??? The FUCK???

A couple of years ago the inside of the SuperDome looked like a third world country, but they’re probably serving Macaframalama Lattes in San Diego.

New Orleans? No food or water. San Diego? Starbucks bunnies, clowns and afternoon picnics.

I don’t attribute this (entirely) to racism, so don’t go there. The only thing the guvment learned during Katrina is that minorities and poor people are easier to contain then they thought. Guess what? You could be a polka-dotted alien w/ orange stripes – if you’re broke (less money = less influence), or a felon (you can’t vote Republican in 2008), then the corporations that keep that scrilla in Bush’s pockets wouldn’t piss on fire to put you out (c) Mr. Mathers.

Now this is just my opinion of course – feel free to disagree (but keep it above the belt – I keeps ether by the barrel). I’m just pointing out a few inconsistencies between the way the government handled these two disasters. You can’t tell me that in two years, the government learned from how they fucked up in New Orleans, and re-created a new relief plan that included booking a damn band & shit like that. I’m sorry…

….you need more clowns.

This morning I came to the realization that no one reads my blog anymore due to me hardly ever posting. SO….

I figured I’d just humor myself and type the first thing that comes to my mind w/ out really editing or thinking about it (seatbelts please). Yes people…while you were watching Ellen weep in despair over some fucking dog and crankin’ that Soulja Boy (or whatever the fuck) while watching 106 & Park in front of your rent-to-own 57″ Sony plasma TV, North and South Korea were having the BEST WEEK EVER. Ohhh you think I’m gonna elaborate? Discuss??

Speaking of ignorance, Nasir Jones broke the emergency glass, pulled out the ether, and reports confirm that Jesse Jackson and the NAACP’s soul are, in fact, still burning slow. Now, don’t get me wrong – theoretically, they had reason to once again capitalize on the free publicity worry….but we’re talking about Nasir Jones! The rapper that made it cool to owe him back like you owe your rent to read books & shit! The nigga that convinced Curtis Jackson – one of the SMARTEST rappers to bless the mic with his monotonous, robot-like lyrics – that reading is FUNdamental!! Sheeit, why you think Curtsy is in all these interviews talkin’ ’bout reading is for dumb ninjas? He don’t want ya’ll to figure out how he got stanky rich!

Man I’ve been workin’.

Sorry for the delay in posts again…but it’s hard out here for a beat-making screenwriter-in-training that blogs part-time. Shouts to the Nahgger Blogger network (c) Reymundo Segundo Telemundo for keepin’ a ninja on his toes.

So….what have I been up to?? Glad you asked. As of this week I’m working on beat demo #2 (you can check a couple joints out here) for my internet peoples…if you rap, sing, tapdance, or do Stripperobics – holla at me. I can make you famous.

I’ve also been working on a screenplay in what you could call my “spare time”. What’s it about you ask? It’s a coming-of-age dramedy not-so-loosely based on my own childhood/teenage experiences. Ig’nance at it’s finest. I actually considered starting a script after the “Curtis” skits caught on. I’d like to thank the Academy, God, and that hooker who did read lines with me in that Motel 6 on 117th street.

I kid.

New Jay album? Word?? It ain’t gonna be a Reasonable Doubt or Black Album (might not even be a Kingdom Come at this point), but whatever…it’s Jay right? Then I read the Times article this morning and it all becomes clear.

Album title: American Gangster

At first, I’m thinking “Ok..a play off of the new Denzel flick. Nice.” Until I read further:

“The album, which his label plans to release in early November, came together over the past few weeks after Jay-Z was shown the film, directed by Ridley Scott, in which Denzel Washington portrays Frank Lucas, a early 1970s Harlem heroin kingpin.”

What a coincidence. He sees the film…..an album is recorded. With the same title. Voila.

My thoughts:

In theory, Universal Pictures** is using Mr. Carter as an insurance policy for the $100 million flick, and I don’t blame them. Jay’s influence among the movie’s target demographic is heavy mayne. They need someone to say “come see this movie because we spent a lot of money putting everyone’s favorite black actor along with some rappers in it”. Why not say it in song? Who better than Camel the G.O.A.T.? I’m willing to bet (although it will go unspoken) that Jay doesn’t even care about how many albums he sells this go-round…Universal probably cut a cross-promotion check that made even his eyes pop out of their sockets. You can’t fit that hustle inside of a rapper [||].

The funny thing is, this movie has a pretty big buzz – and has had one for a while. I know I’m going to see it. My mind was made up before I even saw the first trailer. I’m sure many of you feel this way as well. The story and the actors involved were enough to sell you. Is Jay really even needed? In my opinion this flick has mad money-making potential on it’s own.
